The 2019 McCalla Little League Intermediate All-Stars Baseball Team defeated the Mexico Region team from Matamoros, Mexico on Sunday, August 4th by a score of 9 - 5 to win the Little League Intermediate 50/70 World Series Championship in Livermore, California. In the middle of July McCalla advanced to the Southeast Regionals as the Alabama State Champions in Kernersville, NC. McCalla won the Southeast Regional Championship and advanced to the World Series where they won the U.S. Championship on Saturday, August 3rd defeating Roswell, New Mexico who were the Southwest Champions by a score of 11 -1. Mexico won the International Championship also on Saturday, August 3rd by defeating the Asia - Pacific Region team from Seoul, South Korea by a score of 8 - 4 to advance to the World Series.
In the World Series game, Mexico started off the top of the 1st and scored their first run on a grounded out from Gael Ponce allowing Carlos Garza to score. In the bottom of the 1st inning, McCalla scored three runs. The first on a single from Joseph Roberto allowing Tucker Arrington to score. Drake McBride scored the 2nd run on a wild pitch, and Noah Smith hit a single bringing home Joseph Roberto for the third run. The score at the end of the first inning was McCalla / Alabama 3 - Mexico 1. At the top of the 2nd Mexico scored one run on a single from Alex Morales bringing in Carlos Garza. In the bottom of the 2nd, McCalla’s Drake McBride answered back with a three-run home run bringing in Ty Stricklin and Aden Malpass for scores. The score at the end of the 2nd was McCalla / Alabama 6 - Mexico 2. The 3rd inning was scoreless. In the 4th McCalla scored two more runs, one on a double from Drake McBride allowing Ty Stricklin to score and Aden Malpass scored stealing home. The score at the end of the 4th was 8 - 2.
In the top of the 6th Drake McBride replaced Aden Malpass as pitcher for McCalla because of a 95 pitches rule and Tucker Arrington scored for McCalla on a fake tag obstruction call. In the top of the 7th Mexico got three runs. The first on a double from Emilio Cano allowing Axel Morales to score. The second on a single from Angel Martinez allowing Emilio Cano to score and the 3rd on a grounded out from Victor Beltran allowing Gael Ponce to score. McCalla held on in the 6th to win the game as Drake McBride struck-out the last batter for Mexico.
At pithing for McCalla Aden Malpass is credited with the win, pitching five innings with seven strikeouts and allowing on two runs. Drake McBride replaced Aden Malpass in the top of the 6th on a 95 pitch rule and finished the game with two strikeouts.
McCalla is only the third American Team to win the Little League Intermediate 50/70 World Series Championship. McCalla went 5 - 0 in the World Series tournament defeating the east region from Nutley, New Jersey 11 - 2, the southwest region from Roswell, New Mexico 20 - 8, the central region from Georgetown, Indiana 5 - 4, the southwest region 11 - 1 to win the U.S. Championship and then winning the World Series Championship defeating the Mexico Region 9 -5.
