The 10th annual Race For The Cure BJ Parker Memorial Race will be held this Saturday, August 1st, at Sayre Speedway. The race is an annual event raising money and awareness for the American Cancer Society and Male Breast Cancer. BJ Parker was a leader in the Birmingham racing community since the early ’60s. He was a promoter at the fairgrounds BIR raceway and Sayre Speedway. Parker passed away ten years ago from male breast cancer.
Jolynn “JoJo” Wilkinson, who is the current points leader in the late model division at Sayre, will be the racer to beat on Saturday night. Jojo won her last race at Sayre two weeks ago. She will be racing in the I65 shootout, BJ Parker Memorial race.
The evening will include many special guests, including the Hot Wheels Pacecar, Herbie The Love Bug, a Jack Roush Mustang, and other surprises. Gates will open at 4:00 pm, practice will begin at 5:00 pm, qualifying will be at 6:00 pm, and racing action will start at 8:00 pm. The night will include 7 exciting races, a 60 Lap Late Model, 40 Lap Limited Modified, 30 lap mini modified, 30 lap street stock, 20 lap road runner, 20 lap buzz, and 20 lap hogg. Everyone is encouraged to wear pink in support of the Race for a Cure. Grandstand admission is $15 for adults, $5 for kids 4 - 11 and 3 and under are free. Jolynn “JoJo” Wilkinson is the youngest female in the nation racing in the Pro Late Model Division at the age of 16. She will be a junior this upcoming year at Hueytown High School. JoJo is an honor roll student, a beauty pageant winner, and a cheerleader for the Hueytown Golden Gophers.
