The Bessemer City Purple Tigers Boys Varsity Basketball team became the AHSAA Class 6a Area 9 Champions during the Class 6a Area 9 tournament held at McAdory. In the semifinals on Tuesday, February 5 the Purple Tigers defeated the Hueytown Golden Gophers 77 - 61. In the finals, on Thursday, February 7, the Yellow Jackets got the lead early in the game and held it for most of the game till Bessemer tied up the game at 61 with less than a minute to go. Each team made a free throw to tie the game at 62 - 62. With 3 seconds left on the clock Bessemer City’s # 10 Calvin Townes hit a 2 point shot to win the game for Bessemer City 64 - 62.

Bessemer City will advance to the sub-regionals to face off against the Class 6a Area 11 runner-ups Carver-Birmingham on Tuesday, February 12th at Bessemer City at 7:00 p.m.

Bessemer City’s # 1 Kameron Harris was named MVP of the Class 6a Area 9 Tournament. # 1 Kameron Harris and # 3 Thaddeus Williams from Bessemer City made the Class 6a Area 9 All-Tournament Team.

The stars of the finals for the Bessemer City Purple Tigers were Kameron Harris with 15 points and Ezekiel Sponn with 15 points.
