The Hueytown Swimming Club was first established and opened in the summer of 1965 at 101 Springdale Ave Hueytown. At its peak, the Hueytown Swimming Club was a popular local hang out. At times over 500 families were members and enjoyed fun in the sun at the pool. Over the years, membership dropped off and time caught up to the facility as the equipment and property started showing signs of aging and required repairs. The Hueytown Swimming Club shut down after the summer of 2016. In May 2019, the Legacy YMCA acquired the pool with the intent of repairing and reopening it. Simultaneously, the Legacy YMCA took over the management of the Hueytown Council Of Clubs Community Center and ballpark adjacent to the Hueytown Swimming Club. The city of Hueytown made some major repairs on the community center, and Legacy YMCA opened it as a daycare center for first responders during the COVID-19 outbreak on April 1, 2020, through June 5, 2020.

After acquiring the pool, the Legacy YMCA planned to run a capital campaign to raise the money to reopen the pool, but because of Covid-19, plans were put on hold to concentrate efforts on helping the community with the current crisis. Now the Legacy YMCA has plans to start preliminary planning in November and make a formal announcement around the first part of 2021 to create the capital campaign to raise the money to repair and reopen the pool.

The Hueytown Mayor and the community are excited about the potential reopening of the pool.

“For several years nothing new has been done for the youth and young families of Hueytown and I am very excited about the partnership between the city of Hueytown and the Legacy YMCA the future possibilities,” said Mayor Steve Ware

“I am so happy to hear that the Legacy YMCA of Bessemer is planning to invest in repairing and upgrading the Hueytown swimming pool. Since it closed many of us have longed for a local place to swim and gather to celebrate summer. For families and adults alike this is great news!” said Jena Large of Jena Large And Associates LLC.

“We are excited that the YMCA is investing in the city of Hueytown and renovating our community pool. The pool will provide a great place for our families to spend quality time together during the summer, as it did many years ago,” said Debbie Kiker, Interim Director of Hueytown Area Chamber Of Commerce.

The plan is to raise $125,000 for the much-needed repairs and renovations. Some of which include replacing the filtration and pumping system, a complete interior and exterior facelift with new paint, roof work, and more for a fresh new look, upgrades to the men and women’s locker rooms, a brand new concession area, a complete cleaning from top to bottom, a new slide and more. If the capital campaign is successful, the plans are to have the facility open in the summer of 2021.

The Legacy YMCA has been impacting the Hueytown community for several years now by offering several programs, including the daycare at the Hueytown Council Of Clubs Community Center and a basketball league that practiced and held their games at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church for the last two years.
