Coach Greg Patterson is entering his 21st year of coaching, this is his fourth year at Hueytown High School and his first year as the head coach. Patterson has coached the inside linebackers and defensive linemen at Hueytown for the past three years.

Before joining the staff at Hueytown Patterson spent two years at Walker High School as the defensive line coach, one year at Minor High School as the offensive line coach. From 1998 to 2012, Coach Patterson held several positions on the coaching staff at Sumiton Christian High School, which included being the Head Football coach and Athletic Director for four years from 2009 to 2012. He took the Sumiton Christian Eagles to a playoff berth in Class 2A in 2012.

Coach Patterson is a graduate of Hayden High School where he was a four year Letterman playing on both the offensive and defensive lines. After high school, he spent several years in private business with his father before completing his Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Studies/Social Science at Athens State University. He then continued his education and earned his Master’s Degree in Athletic Administration from Concordia University-Irvine as well as becoming certified in physical education.

Coach Patterson is replacing Coach Scott Mansell, who recently retired from teaching. Mansell was the head coach of the Golden Gophers from 2014 through 2018 and led Hueytown to 3 playoff births in the last 3 years. Coach Mansell will still be a part of the coaching staff at Hueytown High School.

In his first year as Head Coach for Hueytown Golden Gophers, Patterson has some explosive offensive weapons in the backfield with two division 1 prospects at running back Antonio “Yo-Yo” Mason, and Alabama Crimson Tide commit Roydell Williams. It looks to be a good year for Patterson, but he is in a tough division in Class 6a Region 4 with McAdory, Bessemer City, Hillcrest - Tuscaloosa, Paul Bryant, Northridge, and Brookwood.

Hueytown starts their season off taking on the Homewood Patriots at Homewood on Thursday, August 22.
