“Mary Dean Thomas entered into eternal rest on 6 January, 2021. She married the love of her life, Cleophus Thomas, Sr., in December 1961. They shared a loving bond for 41 years. They raised two successful sons, Myron and Cleophus Jr. Mary Dean was a graduate of Dunbar High School, Alabama State University, and the University of Montevallo. Her career in education began in the Mississippi Delta during the Civil Rights Era, she later retired as a Birmingham City School Administrator. Mary Dean was a Life Member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated. As an educator, she impacted the lives of 1000s of students; she will be loved and missed by family and friends.”
Mary Dean was a resident of Bessemer, Alabama, in the Burstall Community. She was the Director of Project Chance under the leadership of former State Representative Lawrence McAdory, located in Fairfield, Al. which was where she helped many students obtain their GED from all over the surrounding cities well after her retirement. Many of those students have graduated from college and are very successful today.
A viewing will be available on 12 January from 12-6 pm at Poole Funeral Chapel, 1501 Seventh Avenue, Birmingham. The graveside service will be on 13 January at 1 pm, Highland Memorial Cemetery, 3115 18th Ave N Bessemer, AL.
