Chambers Funeral Home, Inc., located in Bessemer, recently donated backpacks full of school supplies to local area schools for their 6th Annual Mabel L. Chambers Backpack Giveaway. The family and staff of Chambers Funeral Home delivered over 450 filled backpacks to local schools in Bessemer. Deliveries were made August 5th-August 8th just in time for the first day of school. West Hills Elementary, Hard Elementary, Jonesboro Elementary, Abrams’ Elementary and Bessemer City Middle School were among the schools that received backpacks.

Mabel L. Chambers, formerly Mabel L. Snyder, came to the Bessemer Community seeking employment after graduating from Alabama State University where she earned a Bachelors of Science in Early Childhood Education. Shortly thereafter, she met and married Augustus C. Chambers, Sr. and they became the proud parents of Augusts C. Chambers, Jr. and Augusta Ellen Chambers (Williams). She was the matriarch of the Chambers family.

Mabel was an educator in the Bessemer City Schools with 30 years of service at Dunbar Elementary as a third-grade teacher. She was the consummate educator. Her teaching did not end at the last bell as she would often extend her classroom to the home. After the death of Augustus, Jr. (affectionally known “Man Baby”), Mabel came out of retirement to facilitate the transitioning of the family business for the fourth generation.

Mabel died on December 1, 2010.

To honor her legacy and unwavering commitment to education, her family established the Mabel L. Chambers Endowment. The First Annual Mabel L. Chambers Backpack Giveaway was held in August 2012, where over 250 pre-filled backpacks were given to local students. Each year thereafter, they have increased their service to the community and are dedicated to continuing the legacy befitting of her name and in her honor.

In addition to its initial philanthropic efforts, the Endowment puts on an annual Fun Day Extravaganza held at DeBarbelaben Park in Bessemer.
