With our nation’s political system spinning out of control and conflict increasingly dominating the news cycle, Christians in America appear to be responding in two different ways. Some are desperately seeking political solutions for our nation’s problems while others seem to be simply despondent. While both of these attitudes are somewhat understandable, neither one is truly appropriate for Christians.  The only answer to the chaos and animosity we see all around us today is the love of Christ.

I realize that that “Love is the answer” sounds like an empty platitude but it is, in fact, true. It was this powerful and unique love that changed Saul of Tarsus, a violent hater of Christians, into the Apostle Paul who later wrote so eloquently to the Corinthians about both the beauty and importance of love. It is this same love that transformed Jesus’ disciple John from a man who once suggested that Jesus incinerate a village because they turned him away, into the blessed saint who later penned the lines “Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and everyone that loveth is born of God”.

We live in a society that is fascinated with “self-help” tools and these resources no doubt help some people to make positive changes in their lives but there is nothing aside from the love that impelled Jesus to the cross that can bring about a fundamental change in a person’s deepest nature.

As hopeless as we as Christians may feel to effect positive change in this broken and dysfunctional world, all is not lost. What this country and the world needs most is the love of Jesus and it is up to us to share it with them.
